Combine the family vibe of the Rankins, the hurt of Sara McLachlan and the sensible rebellion of Neil Young - without necessarily sounding like any of them - and you've got black-eyed SUZIE!
While staying true to folk tradition, this head-turning five-piece band is not afraid to break a few cardinal rules! Subtly dark with gothic undertones, black-eyed SUZIE's songs speak of finding some beautiful truth in the unpleasant with honest lyrics set within haunting melodies and raw orchestration that cuts to the quick. A distinctly acoustic neo-folk sound with nods to Americana, rock, country, bluegrass, even classical - cleverly fused in a way that speaks to a diverse set of music lovers' young and old alike.
Core members and husband and wife duo, Christine (singer-songwriter, acoustic guitar) and Mark Matejka (arranger, mandolin, bass), who have known one another since childhood are a quintessential "musical marriage" whose intuitively trusting collaborations are the product of common ancestral histories, ethnic roots and shared life experiences. This last year, black-eyed SUZIE's line-up grew to include the couple's son, Vlad, on drums; daughter, Jára, on bass; and long-time friend and musical associate Marc Provencher on lead acoustic guitar.
black-eyed SUZIE builds momentum and captivates audiences wherever they go. 2012 highlights include playing the National Elk's Lodge Curling Bonspiel dance and social; hosting a series of coffee houses featuring local musicians; headlining the Manitoba Summer Games Festival Stage; opening for The Ripperz of Winnipeg and kicking off the Swan River Valley Northwest Round-up and Exhibition. They were also invited to join the line-up at the Harvest Sun Music Festival's Moody Manitoba Workshop alongside Cara Luft, Logan McKillop, Katy Murphy, and Rick Neufeld. Highlights at Harvest Sun included Fred Penner joining their show as well as performing with The Command Sisters of Edmonton during their set. The band enjoys regular airplay on Stillwater CJ Radio network, was spotlighted on Made in Manitoba on Golden West Radio, and featured on other on-line radio shows such as EV's underground CKCU-FM 93.1 Ottawa and Random Tangents on www.95xonline.com radio Texas.
With several singles and a promo CD already in distribution, black-eyed SUZIE has an EP scheduled for release in 2013. The band looks forward to playing for new audiences in the wider Manitoba region with, among others, the Fire and Water Music Festival 2013.
